Video is a quick and convenient way to showcase your company or product from anywhere. In this blog post we’ll discuss the ways you can share or distribute your video content. In the not too distant past, the only way to share video content outside of standard broadcasting would be a physical copy of the video sent one-to-one to the viewer or client. Today there are a multitude of platforms for you to broadcast your video content online in order to reach, engage, and grow your audience.

There are two general ways to upload your content: direct file sharing or public video posting. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, based on size, speed, and access.

1. Sharing A File Directly Direct file sharing websites such as Dropbox, Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, and WeTransfer are simple ways of sharing video with specific people or delivering materials to clients. There is a simple process of uploading the video and sharing with a link or sending directly to an E-mail. This is best for peer-to-peer transfers or delivering videos for review. It is easy to give notes and make changes to videos before releasing them to the public.

File sharing is also a simple way of downloading video files so that the viewer is able to keep the file for themselves. The advantages here are that you can keep your video private or information confidential more easily as it is not distributed en masse. however it's also important to trust that the viewer will not share, misplace, or otherwise distribute after you have shared the file. However, some video file types cannot be played on certain devices without specific software at the ready, or it can be harder to access for remote viewing, such as on a smartphone. Also, for Dropbox and Google Drive you must make sure you have paid for enough cloud storage to house the video files. WeTransfer is a little simpler in this regard, as it is solely a one-to-one delivery method of files instead of a place for them to be stored for a longer term. For security purposes, most of these sites allow you to password protect the link you send.

2. Posting Video Online

The more popular way of sharing video content is through a video posting site such as YouTube, Vimeo, or Facebook. The advantages of posting on a site like this are the public access that it will receive. This gives every video the potential for a larger audience, but one must make sure that they tag the video with proper search terms so that it will have a greater chance of finding its appropriate audience. Sites like YouTube also give you the ability to pay to promote your content with advertisements that will pop up throughout the site, or within the newsfeed of your friends and followers on Facebook. This can increase the likelihood that viewers will check out your video.

Since there are millions and millions of videos on these sites all ready, it can be a challenge to stand out from the crowd. It is important to catch the online viewer’s attention within the first three seconds of the video, or they may be liable to click on to the next one. It can help to nurture a following of subscribers who will be alerted every time a new video is posted by you. However, on video posting sites like these, it can be more of a challenge to download the video file itself, as they are focused more on streaming. It can also be more expensive to pay for storage in sites like Vimeo, where you can only post a small amount of content for free. One must also be careful of posting videos with copywritten material such as music that you don't own, as they will likely get taken down, or have ads placed on them if the proper materials haven’t been cleared. However, if the purpose of the video is to find a larger audience to raise brand awareness with the potential to go viral, video sharing sites are the way to go.

Online video platforms are also often able to allow links to be shared that are password enabled or shared via a specific link that you can share. In this case, the online video will not be searchable to a wider online audience. This method helps to control the video traffic and keep materials further protected while still shareable easily.

Today, video content is the preferred method of reaching an audience in order to showcase your company or product from anywhere. There are a number of sites which one can use to ensure that their video content is accessible from anywhere. It's important to know who you're targeting first, so can decide which method will work best for your project.
